How is reading scored?

Understanding how the score for this section is score will be very helpful to help the test taker to perform to the best of his/her abilities. Since the exam and scoring are computer-based, delivering answers that are in alignment with the way the computer algorithm is built will help score high marks. The test questions in this section follow this format: fill in the blanks, multiple choice question, re-order and paragraphs. It is allocated 32-41 minutes.

 

  • Multiple choice questions assess reading. This task is divided into two parts. In part 1, the task is to select one answer after reading a passage of 110 words. ; inferring the context

The main skill tested is reading.

  • The main skill tested is reading. The task is to answer questions based on a 300 words passage or written text by selecting more than one appropriate answer.

 

Subskills tested in multiple-choice identifying the relationships between sentences and paragraphs, evaluating the quality and usefulness of texts, identifying a writer’s purpose, style, tone or attitude, reading for overall organization and connections between pieces of information, reading for information to infer meanings or find relationships, identifying specific details, facts, opinions, definitions or sequences of events; inferring the meaning of unfamiliar words.

  • Re-order paragraph requires a proper arrangement of written text. There are two columns opposite to each other; in one column, is written sentences placed in random order and the other column is empty. The test taker has to arrange the written sentences to make a sound paragraph by dragging the text into the empty column

 

  • In addition to other subskills tested this section requires identifying the relationships between sentences and paragraphs, identifying supporting points or examples

The main communicative skill assessed is reading and writing.             

  • The main communicative skill assessed is reading and writing. In part two the test taker is provided with a 300 words text that has blank spaces. The task is to select the correct answer from the dropdown menu

Subskill that applies to fill in the blank and reorder paragraphs are identifying words and phrases appropriate to the context, understanding academic vocabulary,  understanding the difference between connotation and denotation, inferring the meaning of unfamiliar words; comprehending explicit and implicit information, comprehending concrete and abstract information

 

  • The subskill that applies to all other sections are Identifying the topic, theme or main ideas
  • The subskill that applies to all other sections except for fill in the blanks is identifying supporting points or examples and theme or main ideas.

 

In this section, the right answer is awarded 1 mark and a wrong answer gets zero. However, in multiple choice, choose multiple answers, a wrong answer gets -1. Therefore it is beneficial to the test taker to only respond when he/she is certain about the answer to avoid losing marks.
