Fill in the blanks is divided into two parts. In part one, an 80 words long written text with missing words is displayed on the screen and below the text are various words from which the test taker has to select a right answer by dragging it to the blank space. In part two the test taker is provided with a 300 words text that has blank spaces. The task is to select the correct answer from the dropdown menu. Both parts assess reading skills as the main communicative skill.
The subskill assessed include identifying the topic, theme or main ideas; identifying words and phrases appropriate to the context; understanding academic vocabulary; understanding the difference between connotation and denotation and many more.
Tips on how to answer this section.
It is important for the test taker to know grammar to attempt this question. Sometimes it is about identifying whether the missing word is a noun, verb adjective or adverb. Knowing the use of different types of words that form communication is vital. You should be able to tell at first glance whether a word is a noun, verb and so on.
Before selecting the word, read the sentence to the end and after selecting the word read the sentence again to make sure there is logic in your content. If you can’t provide an answer for any blank space, skip it and go to the next one then come back and finish off your work. Don’t waste time.

It is vital for the test taker to read as much as possible to be able to answer the reading section and on other sections as well. Reading improves vocabulary, which in turn will help the test taker to identify the word needed to fill in the blanks and will also improve the test taker’s ability to understand written content and to read faster. Make a habit of recording unfamiliar word to improve vocabulary.
Try by all means to fill all the blank spaces even if you are not sure about the answer. The lowest mark awarded in this section is zero; that is there is no negative marking for a wrong answer. Guessing may score you some marks so try by all means to fill in the blanks.
With reference to example 2, some of the words provided are not used regularly, therefore, it might be difficult to know their real meaning and where they can be applied in the text. Use common sense to make logic of the content even if you don’t know the meaning of the word.
Example 1 Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks
Originally, the critical path method considerate consideration considered contrasted only logical dependencies between terminal elements. Since then, it has been expanded to allow for the inclusion of resources related to each activity, through processes called activity-based resource assignments and resource leveling. A resource-leveled schedule may include delays due to resource bottlenecks (i.e., unavailability of a resource at the required time), and may cause a previously shorter path to become the longest or most “”resource critical”” path. A related concept is called the critical chain, which attempts attains contempt contains to protect activity and project durations from unforeseen delays due to resource constraints. Since project schedules change on a regular basis, CPM allows capable contested continuous constrained monitoring of the schedule, which allows the project manager to track the critical activities, and alerts the project manager to the possibility that non-critical activities may be delayed beyond their total float, thus creating a new criticised calibrated imaginary critical path and delaying project completion. In addition, the method can easily incorporate the concepts of stochastic predictions, using the program evaluation and review technique (PERT) and event chain methodology. Currently, there are several software solutions available in industry that use the CPM method of scheduling; see list of project management software. The method currently used by most project management software is based on a menial manual mental mandatory calculation approach developed by Fondahl of Stanford University.
Example 2 Fill in the blanks
The text below initially had some blanks and required an appropriate word to give the sentence meaning. The word ir red were placed at the bottom of the text and tracked to fill in the blanks. It is easier when demonstrated on the PTE Academic website where you can practice your mock.
