The negative marking is only in multiple-choice- choose multiple answers.
The test structure in this section has the following format: fill in the blanks which assesses reading and writing, fill in the blanks which assess reading only. Other questions include multiple choice choose multiple answers and choose single answers, fill in the blanks and re-order paragraphs.
In this section, the right answer is awarded 1 mark and a wrong answer gets zero. However, in multiple-choice, choose multiple answers, a wrong answer gets a negative one. Therefore it is beneficial to the test taker to only respond when he/she is certain about the answer to avoid losing marks.
There are indicators you can look out for when responding to the question. A phrase that doesn’t even make sense cannot be at the beginning of the sentence. It shows that there are some words missing before it so that it can make sense. Also, look for dates as they can be used to follow chronological order. Conjunctions such as for, nor, but and etc. are also like phrases they can only be used to start a sentence when adding more on what was said before.
In multiple-choice questions, you get a zero for a wrong answer and 1 mark for the correct one. However, in multiple-choice choose multiple answers you get a negative mark for a wrong answer. So leaving a blank space may actually be a good idea instead of scoring a negative mark. In multiple choice choose a single answer blank space is awarded zero. It is not a bad thing to go on a limb and start guessing because you won’t lose marks even if you get it wrong.
